Meet Your DST Faculty: Dr. Sayantica Pattanayak
An ongoing series getting to know your friendly Data Science faculty
You may recognize several new faces around the Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Department this year. This post interviews Dr. Sayantica Pattanayak who also teaches in the Computer Science program.
Dr. Pattanayak welcome to Augsburg! How are your first few weeks going?
The first week was fun as we (me and the students) got to know each other. We all shared what we did in the summer. Also, I am still getting acquainted with the campus.
Tell us a little more about yourself.
I was born and raised in India. I completed my undergraduate and graduate in India. I did my Master of Science (M.S.) and Ph.D. from North Dakota State University. My M.S. was in Electrical and Computer Engineering. While working on my M.S. dissertation, I decided to pursue my degree further but in Computer Science.
After staying in Fargo for nearly 10 years, we moved to Minnesota. Sometimes I wonder why cold doesn’t bother me even though I am from India. Before joining Augsburg University, I taught at the University of St. Thomas, MN. I have two kids. My boy has just started middle school and my girl is in 2nd grade. We live in Maple Grove. I and my husband love traveling especially exploring the National Parks.
Tell us a little bit about your research.
My research area is in Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and Artificial Intelligence. My Ph.D. dissertation was to secure raw data using Neural Networks. Here is my list of publications:

Other than my publications, I advised students in various research Programs available through the University of St. Thomas like UROP (Undergraduate Research Opportunities) and Excel Research Program, and looking forward to continuing my mentorship.
I know you are new to Augsburg. What are you looking forward as an Auggie?
I am looking forward to work with everyone as a team and serve the community.
What classes are you teaching this term?
I am teaching Introduction to Introduction to Computer Programming (Python ) and Computer Organization.
Thanks so much for taking the time to talk with us!
Dr. Pattanayak’s office is Hagfors 369G (the Computer Science home). Stop by and say hello!
